EEG Testing in Syracuse, NY
An electroencephalogram (EEG) records the electrical activity of the brain through electrodes placed on the scalp. CNY Neurological Consulting provides EEG testing as part of the evaluation of epilepsy, seizure disorders, and other neurological conditions.
What Is an EEG?
An EEG measures the electrical activity of the brain by recording signals from electrodes placed on the scalp. The brain generates continuous electrical activity, and an EEG captures patterns of this activity over time. Abnormal patterns can indicate epileptic activity, specific epilepsy syndromes, or other neurological conditions.
EEG is a non-invasive test — no needles are involved in the recording itself. It is safe and painless.
When an EEG May Be Ordered
- Evaluation of a first seizure or suspected seizure
- Diagnosis and classification of epilepsy
- Monitoring of known epilepsy
- Evaluation of unexplained episodes of altered awareness or behavior
- Assessment of encephalopathy or altered mental status
What to Expect
Electrodes are attached to the scalp using a conductive gel or paste. The recording typically lasts 20–40 minutes for a routine EEG. During the recording, you will be asked to rest quietly with your eyes closed. Activation procedures — such as hyperventilation and photic stimulation (flashing lights) — may be performed to increase the yield of the study.
The EEG captures a sample of brain electrical activity. A normal EEG does not rule out epilepsy, as abnormal activity may not occur during the recording period. Conversely, some EEG variants of uncertain significance can occur in people without epilepsy.
Preparation
Wash your hair the night before or the morning of the test and do not apply conditioner, oils, or styling products. Continue taking your regular medications unless specifically instructed otherwise by your neurologist. Sleep deprivation before the test may be requested in some cases to increase the likelihood of capturing abnormal activity.
Limitations of EEG
A routine EEG captures a limited time window of brain activity. Because epileptic discharges may not occur during the recording, a normal EEG does not exclude epilepsy. Prolonged or ambulatory EEG recordings may be recommended when a routine study is unrevealing but clinical suspicion remains.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is an EEG painful?
No. An EEG is a non-invasive, painless test. The electrodes are attached to the scalp with gel or paste — no needles are used for the recording. Some patients find the electrode application process mildly uncomfortable.
Can an EEG detect all types of seizures?
EEG can detect abnormal electrical patterns associated with many seizure types, but it has limitations. Seizures originating deep in the brain or in areas not well covered by scalp electrodes may not be captured. A normal EEG does not rule out epilepsy.
How long does it take to get EEG results?
The EEG recording is reviewed and interpreted by a neurologist. Results are typically available within a few days and communicated to your treating physician.
